A Bit of Rogers History
Rogers, Arkansas is a city located in Benton County in the northwest corner of the state. Its history dates to the early 1800s when the area was inhabited by the Osage tribe. This essay will provide a brief history of Rogers, Arkansas, from its early beginnings to the present day.
In 1806, explorer William Clark traveled through the area that is now Rogers, noting the fertile land and abundant wildlife. The first settlers arrived in the area in the 1820s and established farms along the White River. The town was officially established in 1881 and named after Captain Charles Warrington Rogers, who was a railroad executive.
The arrival of the railroad in the late 1800s brought significant growth and development to Rogers. The St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad, also known as the Frisco, built a depot in Rogers in 1887, which helped to establish the city as a major transportation hub. The railroad also brought new businesses to the area, including sawmills and cotton gins.
During the early 1900s, Rogers continued to grow and develop. In 1912, the city became the site of the first commercial airplane flight in Arkansas when a pilot flew a plane from Rogers to Bentonville. The city also became home to several major businesses, including the Daisy Airgun Company and the Rogers-Herndon Mercantile Company.
In the mid-20th century, Rogers experienced significant growth because of the establishment of several major companies in the area. In 1950, the first Walmart store was opened in nearby Bentonville, and the company’s growth had a significant impact on the entire region. Other major companies, including J.B. Hunt Transport Services and Tyson Foods, also established headquarters in the area.
Today, Rogers continues to thrive as a major business and cultural center. The city is home to a variety of attractions, including the Rogers Historical Museum, which showcases the city’s history, and the Walmart AMP, an outdoor concert venue that hosts a variety of musical acts throughout the year. The city is also known for its beautiful natural scenery, including the Ozark Mountains and Beaver Lake.
